The gold medal match between Croatia, the defending champions, and Serbia, the bronze medalists from London 2012, wrapped up the whole men’s tournament.

It was not that wild battle that some had predicted. In fact the Serbian team controlled the match since the start and, in spite of the strong opposition of the Croatians, its victory was never in doubt, and they made it with a final 4-goal difference, 11-7.

Water Polo, Men's Final - And finally: it’s Serbia!

After twenty years of trying, Serbia finally made it. They had three bronzes and a silver in the past four editions, but now they got rid of their Olympic demons. After a shaky start in the prelims, they blew away all their rivals in the knockout phase, lastly their arch-rivals, the title-holder Croatians, in a one-sided final (the last day saw the largest gap, +4, in the gold medal match). The bronze went to the Italians, while Montenegro had to settle for the 4th place for the third time in succession.

WATER POLO

In yesterday’ semi-finals of the Olympic men’s tournament the defending champion Croatia has played at its best to overcome Montenegro, thrashing them 12-8 (3:4, 2:3; 1:1, 2:4) .
Credit for Croatia’s victory goes in equal way to both her almost flawless defense – although missing a pillar like Damir Buric, and pungent attack.

The sharpest striker was Andro Buslje (CRO), with 4 goals (in 5 attempts, 80 per cent efficiency).
